Indeed one of the issues we all have... including the ADS and all the National Agencies is when they make reports etc available online - as far as I know, everyone is trying to ignore the issue... but when you realise that even the NGR is copyright to the OS... then where does it leave us?
The ADS have the following

However, you should also be covered to do this by your own OS licence. If you are at all concerned about the terms of your licence, you may wish to watermark the maps within the reports.
The key elements here are
a) Does the originator of the report have an OS licence (or need one)
b) Is the report being sold, or is it for no financial gain.
In this case.. Open Archive would expect all the proper permissions to be in place from the originator.. and as Open Archive does NOT lay any claim to the material - ie it remains fully the property of the owner - and is free to view and use... then there is no issue. However - it is often better safe than sorry - and I will ask directly.
This does matter if the information is to be shared with others - NMRs and HERs (and yes the ADS ) the archive stability is based on suitable multiple storage. Open Archive acting as a Portal location. :face-angel:

which is looking at 50p per Meg for archiving - reasonable if you ask me.
Are people aware of this? as although that sounds cheap... my latest 10 day survey in Croatia generated over 1 GB of digital data - YOIKS! There are now paper copies and a report! whoop
but that would cost 500 quid if I wanted to hand that over...
This is an important archive question that must be addressed. who pays?

Your response #2 above is a good one, however, from the OASIS website: "The ADS welcomes community archaeology projects and local societies to the OASIS online submission form."
This asks the question how the two differ? Is it all down to what groups each is being promoted to, with Open Archive aiming to be strongly pushed at the local societies, with OASIS content to remain passively receptive to contributions from same?

You have it in one BRahn. The OASIS system is primarily a development control tool, dealing 'almost ' exclusively with commercial archaeologists and contractors. It does indeed welcome community archaeology projects and local societies but Open Archive is hoping to (via partners) actively and physically go to each and every society to both promote what they could do and listen to what they are doing - AND help in the scanning and OCR of legacy reports - plus help to suggest ways to place any future reports online. The premise is that there is a wealth of information out there... sitting in each location... but how good would it be to bring it all together - then actually go out there and get it!
It is also good to meet each group as well, a face to face, rather than a hope that they might.
An important point is that it is not a challenge to anyone - and it has been thought through, but welcomes constructive criticism and highlighting of issues.
In addition, the information gathered by Open Archive will be freely available to the relevant bodies- NMRs, HERs and the ADS (as long as they don't want cash!) WE decided to use only the pdf as this also allows simple migration of data.

Lots more to tell in November -- more meetings more discussion --- more enhancements and of course the inevitable bug fixing. So far it is doing quite well, with this great comment from a Spanish Blogger

Hmmmm.... not sure what to make of this. Any inititaive to increase access to information is to be applauded. However, as ADS et al point out - it's not an 'archive' - more of a library really. PDF is a proprietary format not an archival one and cannot be relied on to endure. Acrobat is already on Version 8 as it is.
Also I'm curious about the name Open Archive and how it was arrived at - unintentionally or not is seems awfully close to the Open Archives Initiative to which it is not (as far as I am aware) connected. Try googling 'Open Archive' and you'll see what I mean. This unfortunate choice of name and the use of a commercial .co.uk suffix rather than .org or .org.uk seems curious to me.

nothing curious... it was arrived at after all thother options we thought of were already taken... so unintentional.
as to the open archive... this is a portal to archives (the literature of local groups) and it adds new rather than try to say either or. it also passes reports to archives (this was always the intention) pdf is a good format to pass reports. like the oasis 'archive' where details are held and stored in data fields and pdf/doc format. in the end, its up to local groups... people are not forced into using it. its a good idea and is moving forward with agencies. so we will see. if its good it will work

You will be glad to know that the scheme is moving forward, with not only interest, but serious help from National Organisations. A big thanks to them for seeing a good thing and knowing it is nothing sinister but a system to add information that was previously unavailable. Look forward to a meeting where I get to pitch it proper! }
