Lets also not forget that members of the construction industry by and large, have real jobs with real money-can be adequate compensation for travel time.:face-huh:

Currently my employer pays passengers after 45 mins of traveling while drivers get paid after 15 mins overtime pay, but pay can also be awarded as flexitime as well, as system that works well I think, reason that passengers only get over time after 45 mins is because they sleep (thats me in the back snoring), read or relax on the way back....oh and overtime pay is to and from site.
Accomodation can be tricky I personally would rather return home than stay away, had a few bad experiences in B&B and rented places...
May god go with you in all the dark places you must walk.

But not all. I have dealt with a lot of jobs alongside geotechnical engineering types and they often do the kind of crazy commutes described above but are often on even shorter, worse paid contracts than the archaeologists.

I have to agree having some experience of working alongside non-archaeological consultants they do seem to have long commutes on a regular or semi-regular basis, but then when you get to the kind of super senior level working for national agencies you have equally large territories to look after .... try 3 hours there and 3 back for a site meeting. I have to say in my experience commercial archy units are actually quite reasonable when it comes to remuneration for travelling to and from site.
I think once we get past 30 most of us would rather return home than have to stay overnight for prolonged periods ....
