I know some people might think it was a tad silly to ask about them being metric but my thinking went like this:
by calling them 7" nails we sound like a bunch of builders-but if (for example) we call them 175mm drawing pins, then we sound more like proffesional archaeologists?
What's the difference I hear folks ask? (7" or 175mm) about 3 double vodkas!!

I am so grateful that BAJR exists as I was whistfully rooting through my toolbox today thinking about lovely useful things and realising that I probably shouldn't mention it as it was a teeny bit sad [:I]
There aren't many places you can drool over nails and hand tapes without being dressed in a jacket with cuff links at the back...... :face-approve:

I did like that tutorial.. it was one of the few places you can actually find Survey arrows in the UK... York Survey Supplies being the best for ready mades. I do miss (and I have but one left from my original 12 - dating back to 1986) my sprung steel red and black arrows... they ain't cheap though..
If Unit wants to make me 10 arrows... for 2.50... I will make him an offer!

2poundfifty ! more like ?25 seems to be the going price for ten
but you cant love a nail like you can a survey pin
I also recently lost my last one of a two that defiantly go back to the mid nineties One was thicker and white powder coated and the other one just thin wire that was never straight but it had so much personality ho the jolly japes we had.
and besides it?s a health and safety issue- less bending
even with seven inches you will have to put three in the ground with a nail, even if you do the pushing it in by holding it at the head you are still going to have to get down to four inches above the ground, even over a small area that?s a lot of stress on the back and knees even if you do it right by the manual on even ground. With a survey pin a slight balletic stretch and its in and retrieval is just as simple ?you are now working at another level definitely up a couple of gears and and no need for the bulldog clip to keep the blasted tape measure on the nail, those Victorian land surveyors knew what they were doing
where to find straight galvanised wire

Nope... they are nails.. with ribbed shanks.. and nail heads.. look at the picture. you cynic you.
Not available at camping shops :face-confused: I carry 6 in my toolroll.. weigh next to noting, and I love them almost as much as my survey arrows... and I can have a hundred 7" nails for 10 survey arrows. You will also be glad to know that they go through the endcap of a longtape, but the nail head is broader than the hole, so do not pop off. So for all those tasks you used to use a 6" nail for... trench corners, section lines, etc... now there is this little baby. And I found I take more care of them as well.
Tent Pegs..
you could use them as tent pegs (see above) but tent pegs they ain't.
