...to see the metal detecting thread locked and sea-surgion banned, I was watching that with interest. that guy was a bit abrasive but articulate and insicive. he countered everything u thrrew at him, u were on the ropes, folk were starting to agree with him, u couldnt answer valid points, your pet project gets a bit of stick, so you ban the guy, WELL DONE. considering the minute number of people who look at this board there was no need for that, and troll, brave words AFTER the guy has been banned. what happened to free speech? all this from a forum called bajr baiting, named after a disgusting bloodsport, "hello pot, its kettle here."

Medi-evil. The question of detectorists is a huge one and trust me-I`m for baseball bats every time. However, Sea Surgeon needs to recognise a couple of things. For starters, he/she does not decide what is or is`nt offensive on this site-that`s for Mr Hosty. If "I`m not apologising.." is the contributors response then quite frankly-that`s arrogant in the extreme. Whilst Sea-surgeon displays a superb grasp of grammar, argues like a pro and makes some extremely valid points, he/she needs to recognise that this site is readable worldwide. Efforts are underway to make serious headway on the detecting issue. Long lasting and tangible results come from careful research and planning...let it run it`s course. On the free-speech front...I`m not willing to discuss the years I spent fighting Nazis/hunters/vivisectionists and any fekker else who uses violence to achieve personal agendas so all this rant about eco-activism and protest-whilst heart warming, is mis- directed.Been there...lots. Don`t get me wrong, I`m on your soddin side but-there are ways and means if you get my drift. There are times and places for confrontation and you will find me up the front every time but, when greater benefits can come from carefully planned ideas...I`m up for that too. Sea surgeon isnt banned-just made to stand in the corner for a bit.If it`s any consolation, I get my bum smacked on here too...difference is...I quite like it. Guys, don`t go away...just grasp the bajr etiquette by the genitals and get stuck in. With Sea-surgeons clear grasp of language, he/she should have no problems in putting together some devastating messages on here (within the rules!) and I for one look forward to seeing them...Hope this helps...

This is a board that is designed for free and open speech... it is not here however to allow offensive comments to be allowed to just go past without some sort of comment about these being unsuitable. I have asked for an apology both online and also via a personal email. Neither were forthcoming, and therefore a one month cooling off ban has been imposed. I have seen too often the language and mud slinging that degenerates into clever retorts and one liners. These discussions go nowhere. If people want to slag off people ? fine? just try not to do it here.
I find comments such as ?they should return to raking in skips? offensive? just as I find comments about some archaeologists offensive.. the people are warned and an explanation for the warning is given.. (remind me to smack you harder next time troll?

To continue on with a diatribe with such frankly bizarre comments such as ?they rip the rings off dead pilots ? is just not debating in my meaning of the word.
Sea Surgeon is quite welcome to email me directly and tell me details of these events, he/she might even want to explain there comments.. if not we will just have to wait until August when I hope they will try and temper their comments? I am interested to hear them, but not in the language in which they are couched.
I hope that is clear and sensible. I should perhaps create an Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) something which I was proud that after 3 years .. this forum had not required.

I do sympahtise with Medi here. I thought we were getting around to some interesting points about how we approach the archaeology in the ploughsoil, which I believe was raised by sea surgeon. I started the thread, not to go on about MD's but about one particular company. I dont see how a thread could harm davids standing if he was clearly seen to be working toward a solution and defending MD's legitimate activities.I would have thought the opposite was true. To lock the thread seems to me to be more damaging as it appears that archaeologists have views which are not for public consumption, and so have a secret agenda. As for the terminology used to describe a section of our society, it is common usage, lets talk about that! we could have had an interesting discussion about why there is no Schindlers list about gypsies, or are travellers archaeologically recoverable? I am Romany by birth, where is my past?
I never really thought about this forum being owned per se. I will have to go away and think about all this.

Which is why I am willing to see a sensible debate on the subject.
Acceptable use policy for the BAJR forum is as follows...
If asked to justify a certain stance off list... reply to it.. explain and we can go from there... do not ignore direct requests to moderate language.
now... with that out the... it seems unfair to start a debate without Sea Surgeons input.

I am sorry many of you are unhappy with this .. but try to understand. Unsubstantiated rants, no matter how cleverly worded, are just another layer of confusion and bigotry that adds to an already complex isssue.
.. Perhaps you would not mind me saying Nigger - or perhaps saying that such and such is a Paki... I hope like me you felt sick to see these words and would say there is never a justification for their use... That is how I feel... we can have serious and worthwhile debates without using inappropriate language... without accusing an entire group of people ... without resorting to unverified heresay..
