As a suggestion and caveat to our thread on Health and Safety, may I recommend membership of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management. Seeing as our earlier requests for the new HS handbook (written by the grown ups in our profession) to be placed in site huts around the country fell on deaf ears....join these guys and get educated.If we ALL know the score, it will be all the more difficult for dangerous muppetry to prevail.....

had a quick look. do they actually provide training or do you have to get the training first to be allowed to pay them the 70+ quid to become a member?

I am a bit sceptical about this ? there is no information about what you need to be a member. The benefits are essentially an information service. They do not offer any training.

Interestingly I have just done a search on health and safety and construction and then health and safety and archaeology and surprises surprise I get the following hit in the top ten.

In contrast if you go an organisation such as http://www.ilex.org.uk , a former client, their web site is all about training and qualifications.

Similarly I have found no difficulty in getting the SCAUM manual if I am prepared to pay the cost.
