Anyway... just talked to BaRAS and have got digger wage put up to
?14,142 (pro rata) and with overtime on Saturday - then quite a healthy wage... remember that you will have hoiday entitlement as well.

And the lesson to us all is 'If you don't ask, you don't get'. Any chance you could ring around a few more units tomorrow, Host?

Sigh!!!
Though as the new payscales are yearly, everyone who in in work just now 'should' get the rise!
I will however ensure that ALL new jobs from tommorrow are in line.
Hey.... I do what I can! But in May, everyone will be getting the payscales, BAJR conf poster, 100 Wee BAJR Books, an info sheet, organisation reg form ... so it will get covered.
thanks due for keeping me on my towes!

David,
I think it would be usefull to post these pay increases well in advance of when they should be introduced and a date at which they will be introduced. Many units put up their prices at the start of the financial year this would be as good as time as any.
Given that quotes last upto six months archaeological companies need to know this far in advance what the rise will be.
Similarly admin does take time so therefore warning is needed for this reason as well as well.
What are the increases based upon

Cheers Peter... the increases are based on the IFA guidlines (which most Units should be aware of) which are tied to Local Govt rates (cue discussion, but until a different and globally accepted pay scale... we is stuck with this one)
I am remiss about not putting up the new rates and will ensure that next year people know... well in advance.
If people do know that every 1st April the rates go up, it should help.
April Fools Day seems like just asking for me to scare people with 562% across the board rises

Just a quick thought...
Even if a field archaeologist with 6 months experience
did get a 562% rise, her/his wage would still be considerably less the 'official' salary of Tessa Jowell. As Culture Secretary and head of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport she, of course, has parliamentary responsibility for heritage and archaeology.
Her salary as an MP and minister?
?136,677 + (vast) allowances. I'll bet she really empathises with workers in the heritage sector...

I've just seen the latest job adverts on BAJR from MoLAS ...
[u]Senior</u> Geoarchaeologist and [u]Senior</u> Illustrator ... both at salaries of ?17,938 per annum.
Is this not well below the recommended minimum? I would expect these jobs to be classed as at least BAJR Grade 5 (Project Officer / Specialist 1 - ?18,450-?20,235 ), if not Grade 6 (Project Manager / Specialist 2 - ?20,895 -?27,492). Not to mention London weighting.
I'm shocked!
