Has any BAJR-ite ever considered changing their name to that of a famous archaeologist and seeing if they get better service on the archaeological 'respect' front. Imagine a job application signed by Mortimer Wheeler or Flinders Petrie or V Gordon Childe. How could anyone refuse you?
Wouldn't it be fantastic to get the 'new' person on site and say to them 'OK you're in for digging out the sh!$-pit with Kathryn Kenyon and then when you've finished I want you to help Schliemann over there take down the Heras fencing'.

Anyhoo, one could`nt possibly trust Schleimann to take down the Heras fencing-he`d claim it was from some classical event based on a naff grasp of stratigraphy and typologies, pin it to his visually frightening wife and steal it by smuggling it out of the country.Surely, Wheelers application form would just be a tick the "boxes" affair.Wonder if Elgin would be successful in an application for a position in building recording? Excise and Customs illicit antiquities perhaps? As it happens-tiz bad enough getting work using my own name!!!!

One of the first sites I dug out of Uni at the very beginning of the 1990s was at a place called Snettisham in Norfolk, where I worked under the direction of Ian Stead of the British Museum. No further explanation needed I am sure to such a learned bunch as frequent this site. Nothing I have ever found since has come even remotely close to this gold-tastic experience.
Also worked on the afore mentioned site - the find that got some of us on site excited though was a neolithic axe and associated pottery rather than the torcs, meanwhile the site hit front pages in the national press even getting a couple of inches in the the financial times (must be a first for archaeology appearing in the FT) - just shows the difference between the public getting excited over bright shiny things and the diggers prefering scruffy flint and broken pot.
If Post-Med Potterer is interested the dig team photos are posted on a site
http://www.archdiggers.co.uk/diggers/frameset.html under photo galleries snettisham which one was you I'm the one kneeling in all the shots - be nice tro catch up with one of theold crew.
