Ah sorry Troll - I think you misread my post as an attack on you! By "the powers that be" I meant the people who make the trowel. And by "nobody wants it as much as us" - I was not referring to the sample but the actual release of the thing!
But thank you anyway! can't wait to test it!

whats wrong with the usual method for keeping hold of it?
Use trowel, put trowel down next to section, accidentally shovel trowel into wheelbarrow, empty wheelbarrow on vast spoilheap, spend 30 mins digging spoilheap, get metal detectorist to systematically go over spoiheap for a further 30 mins, finally find trowel, use trowel, put trowel down next to section etc etc.
works for me every time and gives the metal detectorist something to do

Perhaps they need voice recognition so they only beep for your whistle, not anyone elses; so the whole site doesn't start beeping when one person looses their trowel - imagine the headache

personalised theme tune methinks.....[8D] or a homing beacon! or a go go gadget trowel that flys out from your sleeve and flys back when you have finished with it! Actually, i think a trowel that sends up a distress flare when its owner whistles would be good as well....if not against Health and safety! B) all things that may have appeared on tommorrows world if it was still on tv![:I]

I suppose those who survive another winter archaeology ?campaign? (oh I forgot its spring isn?t it [manic cackle[:p]], would have incredibly small show-off holsters, containing trowels so small that they have actually ceased to exist, turning into ?dark matter trowels?.
The kind where the handles keep falling off and are frequently mended with super glue.
Mended because the owner worries they won?t find the edge without their lucky trowel, and mended in case they have to buy a new one and get mistaken for a new digger.
But really they could never be mistaken for a newie, for the smell, creaking joints, worn toecaps and strange demeanour gives them away (I?m speaking personally before anyone draws a trowel on me at the 'OK Ditch).
Could I have a holster? But could I have a gun in it?
It would be fun to shoot my sections straight ?}

Trowel Holsters!! Whatever next.... How about knee pads, or kneeing mats??
I also met a dig director on foreign training dig who was very proud of his locally made 'holster'. Trouble was, that once inserted into the holster it never came out!!
What is wrong with the old (tried and tested) back pocket... A true trade mark of an archaeologist [8D]

I think I know who that director of a foreign dig was. His trowel holster was considered to be extremely unfashionable. On the other hand knee pads are de-rigeur in my unit and considered to be extremely fashionable. (But I would say that cuz I started the fashion out of a desperate need to be able to move in the morning)
