As it's a sunny Friday afternoon (and to drown out the sound of padlocks being closed on a few topics
) shall we have some fun?
What are the "best" heckles you have had? I shall start with:
"Are there any dinosaurs in there?" (two foot under a car park in a city centre)
"If you find five pounds in there, it's mine. I lost it yesterday" (I don't even [u]understand</u> that one, yet so many people yell it! And think they are original..)
"Have you found any gold/Romans/dead bodies?"
"Have you found
ANYTHING
?"
I'm only an amature digger (until a week on Monday [8D]), so I'm sure that there will be some good ones out there......

You'll quickly become tired of "..you can come and dig my garden if you like.." and thanks for a non-controversial thread Angi...

My sister is a primary school teacher, and she asked me to give her 10 year olds a 'What is Archaeology' talk about 2 months ago. I gave a little this is what we do, where we do it, how we do it. Then, we went around the classroom, thirty odd kids asking mostly fairly bog-standard questions, dinosaurs, gold, been on telly, any skellies, what do you do with all the stuff, most valuable find, who were the Celts, did the Vikings wear horned helmets, all that sort of stuff. I had been talking about Tara, (you know the huge complex older than the Pyramids that our dearest govt is trying to drive a motorway through, oh yeah I got questions about that too, kiddies are a lot more clued in nowadays than I was!). Anyway, one kid decided to bring me up on a point about Tara, he said the myths and stories said there was a big banqueting hall at Tara, and why did I not agree, and how come archaeologists don't believe in history! I thought that was quite good!

Not really a heckle, but my favourite comment ever (and this is true) was: "Well I've lived here all my life, and I don't remember any Romans..."

It's usually the kids that ask that daftest questions, but they are also the only ones to ask anything that'll make you think too!
Ah, I almost forgot the "come and dig my garden" one... closely followed by "Are you Time Team?"
One thing I have found is that it's quite good fun to start explaining walls to people who actually meant gold/Romans when they asked what you've found. Maybe that's my mean streak coming through

It's always afterwards that you think of a witty retort, but there is just no answering that one, surely?! It sounds like a winning answer to a caption competition - so keep it handy
