Ah the great pot wash... I still have associations with puishment... If we were... er.. 'bad' the night before... it was pot washing the next night... I was only arrested 3 times and thats German Laws that seem to be v strict (ie no playing on childrens swings a 2am) and so felt the punishment of Pot washing was cruel and un-nessessary :-)

Pot washing is however a great leveller. Or at least it used to be in the days when everyone in the unit was expected to do a bit (from the lowliest digger to the top of the tree). Some of the funniest stories (and the nicest people) in archaeology I met across a pot-washing bowl...
Pot marking however, that's a different story. IF forced to do that for longer than 20 minutes, I would suggest holding your breath until you pass out!!

Pot washing - develop an 'allergy' to water/toothbrushes, or put on headphones and MP3 and wait to be asked to leave as your singing is annoying everyone else.
Pot marking - display complete ineptitude and ensure that all writing is illegible, or develop number dyslexia (very common anyway amongst archaeologists).
Residue sorting - pretend to fall into a coma, as this will happen anyway if you have to do it for more than 30 minutes.
