How they do will have more to do with the framework in which the private companies operate, rather than whether the individuals within a company are 'up to it'.
I am yet to meet a commercial archaeologist who wouldn't jump at the chance at doing more on many sites but who are held back by a system which lacks the enforcement powers necessary to make a higher level of examination economically feasible.
Also, I would point out that there are countless post excavation departments out there doing some very impressive research within the current system, and we shouldn't belittle their efforts.

And of course the old-style organisation of public/academic sector had such a fine track record in publication before commercial archaeology as well.

Notwithstanding the genuine issues, do they suggest that non-commercial organizations never have deadlines and can take as long as they please, with an open budget?
I thought that only applied to government or FA funded construction!

Professor Takakura's concerns can be very easily dealt with by writing the brief/specification appropriately. If the timescale can't be quantified - don't put in a fixed deadline.
The problem, as expressed by him, appears to be more with the commissioning organisation than with the private sector organisation.
