The best way way to set out trenches, field survey transepts or site grids is to bend down on one knee, shut one eye, frame your open eye with your hands to shade from the sun and give the instructions 'back a bit', 'to me a bit', 'left a bit' or 'right a bit' until whatever your setting out looks about right.
