Greetings to you all and I trust that you all had a good holiday.
After two and a half years in the wilderness, I`ve finally put foot back on British soil and am in the throes of acclimatising to life without ambient temperatures or palm trees! Have just spent Christmas in the Welsh valleys and despite their beauty-the Welsh weather has been a bit of a baptism to say the least.
Thank God- I start digging again in the second week of January. I`ve already booked a CSCS test in Swansea and have gone out and bought nine-inch thick thermals. I thought I would ask you guys just what has changed in archaeology over the past few years that I may have missed. As my Cyprus internet was a bit patchy- I`ve only been able to keep up to a minimal level of awareness. I will read through this new fangled and rather sexy-looking website soon though.
So- just what has changed in the last two and a half years? Many thanks in advance for your help and the very best of wishes for the new year to you all.

Hi Troll. Welcome home. I can't really update you on the state of UK archaeology as I too have been away. But nice to have you back....K

No ones doing accomindation because of the tax thing, other wise the same old fights

Its a mixed bag... and something to sort in 2010... clear guidance and clearly defined adverts...
The crux is location of place of work.... if it is the site itself, then you are taxed on accom. If the place of work is the company office and it is over 50 miles (approx) from the site, therefore accommodation must be provided, it is tax free... as not a benefit, but needed to carry out the work AWAY from your normal place of work.
there... thats not too hard.... Would the IfA like to chip in to suggest if I have it wrong.

Accommodation's the biggy, but that's been covered. I suppose things have gotten ever more digital. It's very rare that I get to hand plan or take levels these days. To follow on, sites seem to be getting more person-task specific (ie site photographers/ surveys/ soil people) than I can recall for a long time, and that's across units. Maybe it has more to do with the size of site/ project design I've been involved with lately. And as you've noticed the CSCS card is becoming de rigour.On the whole, PPE provision's gotten better, but conversely site with silly (ie, not directly relevant) glove and goggle rules seem more common. I can't think when I last got to wear my tilly hat.
Otherwise same old, same old at the coal face.

Yes the PPE is certainly getting better but you need it almost permanently, mainly because a lot of the jobs at the moment are infrastructure related and there are a lot of things going on alongside the archaeology. This also means no more shorts and more often than not being drugs and alcohol tested at the beginning of each new site, Enjoy.

The drugs I can handle... but no shorts!!! Seriously thats no bad thing.. the number of men that must remember that wearing shorts and squatting down puts me off my lunch!
