The problem is, searching for the equivalent to bead in other languages can be awkward if you don't have an appropriate search term.. I had a look at the Vindolanda tablet site today, nothing for bead or perle in the translations, but I live in hope. I have the Vindolanda report on jewellery, so I'll have a look in there tomorrow.

I know. There's the great quote from the Vindolanda tablets, about a father wishing he'd cut his daughter's ear lobes off as she cost him a fortune in jewellery. I'll see if I can find it, but no mention anywhere of what the Latin for bead is. I've had a surf in dictionaries, none of the online Latin ones have anything for bead or perle or perlen. Still, somewhere, there's someone who has written about stringing things.
I'm amazed that neither Pliny had anything, the old gossips.

Monile is the Latin for necklace, and a bead necklace is monile baccatum. Huzzah!

Cheers for your advice guys.
Chiz - I got the Griffiths book - it's very good. I've put the others on my birthday list.
As well as wanting to practise at home, the main reason for asking for help was that I'd volunteered to help the Cathedral archaeologist out when I have a spare day here and there.
He was happy to give me some drawing to do, despite my lack of experience because it helps him out and allows me to learn and develop skills under a proper archaeologist. So it's and excellent trade off really. I'm drawing 20th Century wine bottles that came out of a demolished wall in a school (!). Two of the necks have the foil still attatched with the name of "Laing & Co. Sunderland" on both the foil and underneath on the base. It took all day to draw two bases. Hopefully the pace will pick up once I'm a little more profficient!

I once got cheated by St John Simpson when acting as Illustrator on teh Merv project... I was knocking out about 60 odd pot drawings a day (pencil not illustration level)... and he then told me it was a shame I was so slow... so I came up with an ever more efficient way of drawing teh rims bases and sherds... faster and faster.. into a production line, until one day I was up to over 150 (a long day though) anyway... when I went for my AAI&S membership I told them that I was not too good at pot drawing - and told them my best was 150 but I could manage about 60+ on a day. They laughed at me and told me that I had been suckered! I phoned up St John and he said the imortal line..." I know I fibbed to you, but it seemed to work... and you did get through the backlog!)

Not sure about the bead breakthrough,
baccat, bacat, could be a bit of a cow, or berry or pearl.

I can confirm that if you invite David to visit your archaeological project he will happily demonstrate his skill and speed at drawing cobbles through the medium of the planning frame!!
You are right of course about how speed often increases to match the funding available....my record is 66 profile drawings using Illustrator in 10.5 hours cos there was only 10.5 hrs funding to get the report finished......
