You dont seem to have any positive comments about people who are self employed. what kind of support do the unions give to self employed people. You say that there are advantages to an employer but the correct self employed term is client. To succeed in a competitive world there should be an advantage to a client selecting your services. You seemed to be suggesting that people who are selfs are tempted to avoid paying taxes which isn’t very nice. I would say that they are taking responsibility for paying it. PAYE is a throw back system for factory workers where the government and the bosses invented income tax for the masses then patronised them and kept them in the dark. Have you checked your code recently, I think you should. Why for instance cant you claim your costs to and from work.
I wouldn’t say self employment is rosy, for instance you have to keep a continual eye on changes each year made by the inland revenue to keep abreast of legitimate expenses. Do you do that? In most industries, doctors, architects, there are professional bodies who advise their members about the changes and consequences. They also lobby and directly negotiate on the principles of professional individual identity. So for example architects are not involved in CIS but archaeologists haven’t got a clue and the only reason that I am not in CIS is that I rang somebody up and they said that I was the same as an architect. I did not question the logic but it would have been nice if it was confirmed by a professional body particularly as there are a lot of so called archaeologists who go about imaging that we are a subsection of the construction industry positively begging it would seem to take alcohol and drug tests and learn about how to pour cement safely. Unfortunately the obvious professional body for archaeologists was established with council and government run units in mind and has dug that hole deeper with its name change. Although Hosty would appear satisfied with its advice for the self employed which makes it alright then.
What I would want from a union is protection from having my self employed status questioned. What happened in the construction industry is that a lot of them went a step further than self employed and became limited companies as well. One of the problems with self employment is that it is barely mentioned in statue. It is still a very new taxation concept unfortunately mostly administered and advised by people on paye badly.
