Sometimes... well, more than just sometimes... I get the urge to say "chuff this... I wish I could set up a not for profit archaeology unit!" One that isn't driven by profit, competitiveness, shystering and manipulation. One that has the best intentions for its staff... equal shares (ie a stake in the company, not a share holding thing), equal status and equal level... and, above all, the archaeology it works on. Then I wake up and get back to reality.

Unfortunately... for me to set a not for profit archaeology unit, I'll need to have stashed a load of archaeologically derived (?) profit away in my bank account. Unfortunately, no can do... financially, I'm a debt collectors wet-dream at the moment.

You can still get paid if you run a not for profit organisation! Granted you would need some money in the first place to set it up. As I have hinted at before, the rates some people working for themselves (as sole traders) means they must pretty much be a not for profit organisation, in fact one could argue that the entire system is pretty much not for profit...

YOu will need capital investment... for example, tools, equipment, resources, etc... but like I am doing on one project..
HLF pay for things like portacabins, Toilets, tools etc... then there is match funding, funding for consultation , payment in kind (volunteers) etc. etc...
I get paid... which is only fair... and others (3 will get full self employed field staff rates) and of course there is money for the researchers, the samples etc... the publication...blah blah...
BUT... it makes no profit... nobody milks it... everyone has fun... a good job is done... and archaeologists go away with a decent (but not greedy) amount.
Start with a local group perhaps

..and for that initial capital investment, there are surely some government programs, even in this tightened-belt age, which could help out.

It's a great idea. However, even in this (theoretically) ideal situation you have to be careful. They've had these for years in Italy, though the structure is set up as a co-operative. Unfortunately, what's happened on a number of occasions is that the co-operative will offer you work, then offer to pay you with a share of the project. Alternatively, many seem to go bankrupt just at the end of the project. Nett result= you've been shafted!!!! They then reform the Co-op under a different name and start again. However, in saying that, i would hope that the law is a little more stringent here, which would make this sort of con quite difficult. In Italy, it seems to happen quite regularly, and not just in archaeology, but in all sectors, as both my brother and sister have discovered to their cost. Don't you just love Berlusconi!!!!!!!!

This is a ridiculus idea.
you need capital
reputation
experience
logistics
-tools
-vehicles
net result tax avoidance
the tax man will crush your nuts at the cost of everyone b ut the biggest: hence start from scratch
suggest only bright ideas, please
