i talked to one her person who had a great idea, which meant that everyone else stands the risk of a system wide redundancy!, with the exception of the HER workers?

i agree the data is vital but not at the risk of employability, if you live and work in the ludite existence of the DIGGERS (barely with electrity on site) who barely get access to a computer, let alone enough time to study them sufficiently to learn how to MANAGE THEM!

sounds like a technological elite to me, especially when the twain do(not) meet.


i mean honestly. WHY should 50 people keep their posts intact (as a priority) over 7500 other people whom must also work out what is it about what we do should be a reason to stay in the industry?

What kinda planet is Yellow Mike commuting from? The assumption that anyone employed as a 'digger' is computer illiterate is clearly out of touch with planet earth.....most 'diggers' I know are more switched on than archaeological management....and indeed I see more varied computer usage in the field than I ever see in offices....

sorry to sound incredibly incensitive, but there is a serious consideration here?

what KIND of industry structure would permit a static peak within the fundamental basis for the organisation and/or industry, whilst it is unproportionally difficult to get there without considerable assistance for the majority.

also note that the basis for the industries infasture requires the well connected static hub To be legislatedly made indestructable?

I'm sorry it is a difficult situation, especially when trying to find a comparable wage within a slow economy, but we must note that the HER and archiving skills are a very valuable skill to a canny employer

but your right that doesn't help.

This disjuncture between arguments is actually the reason why we must lobby for such a change, but only to a considered position as opposed to a band wagon of populous disapproval



kevin, your right we do not have a technologically inept workforce.

but this is about the majority, whom you must also remember these people are either not represented on a daily basis or remain silent, or muffled by a superior command of the written (spoken) language of experience?

including the wrath of the employer............

we are all facing challenges and changes (maybe a lack of perspective is to be taken for granted), but we must be able to argue the case for this as a real considered issue, not solely as sacred cows from which we risk legislating into obscurity.

we know what we are doing

we know how to go about it

we know how to adapt

we are flexable




the real issue should be what is it about what I am saying is to be considered unprofessional conduct outside of a Accepted use policy

this is in effect the reverse wherby its almost a measure of positive descrimination towards the basis upon which the industry is founded


if i cannot tread these boards for the sake of a question others will ask in the halls of power then how could we manage to answer such a question in post when pressed?

Furthermore, I would add that to get to the heady-heights of HERdom, the vast majority of HER staff had 'previous' - ie they did the digging rounds well before moving up and getting the cushy indoor job. Its not all about knowing how to move a mouse around, making tea and producing pretty pictures... you have to actually know someting about archaeology. In fact, I'd go as far to say that, for many, the archaeology came first, then (like me) they learnt a bit about records, databases and GIS.

well it apprears I am either patronising the field staff, or insulting the heritage of the industry itself.

A catch 22 I dare say.
