Time Team opportunity

Had a nice discussion with Time Team about 3 posts they are looking to fill.

Really they are trying to look to a future.

Have a look... and if you consider you can... then why not.

Time Team are currently in production for their 19th series and are looking for some new faces for the on- screen team.


We are looking for a Field Archaeologist who would essentially be a digger, spending all three days of every programme in a trench, speaking to the rest of the on- screen team about finds and thoughts. At least 24 months of full time digging experience would be required. The shoot schedule runs from 4 April to 12 August, with three filming days every other week, tending to fall Tuesday Thursday with travel days either side.


We are looking for someone who has expertise in Archaeological Computing to be an occasional contributor (specific programmes only), generating and explaining output to the on- screen team.


We are also looking for a Landscape Archaeologist to be an occasional contributor (for specific programmes only). Again this would be to work with the rest of the on- screen team.


For these roles we are happy to consider people with or without broadcast experience. What is important is high energy, good rapport with the team and of course being comfortable on camera!

Good luck to anyone who applies and maybe (if successful) they could wear a BAJR logo on one of the shows.....

Slightly off subject, but concerned wth revamping the show..... I've always thought that what would 'perk-up' Time Team would be to have a couple of 'old lags' sitting in the studio (something similar to the Statler and Waldorf characters in The Muppet Show) commenting on the exploits of those out in the field....not in a hyper critical fashion (well other than where it was deserved), but more as a kind of commentary on the sense of it all i.e 'why don't they put they put the next trench there' or 'why don't they do some multi-element analysis of the soil layers' or 'take some column samples' or 'they shouldn't let that mental environist chew the soil samples' etc etc....

It's worth it for the excellent food; the on-site nosh facilities are unreal.

The work itself however is better suited to someone who is (prepared to be) self-employed, as the rates might not accord with what all units charge staff out at

And patience. You can't just dig something cos it's interesting. It is TV-driven and so you might have to tickle the same pile of spoil half-a-dozen times and then stop as filming is over.

After spending three days up to my a**e in mud that made me laugh Kev. As regards the digging for TT, when I was at MoLA one digger on the Greenwich park program had to explain why he had thrown a rare inscripted slab of stonework onto the spoilheap several times, until he got it right for broadcasting. Terrible. Especially when he got into the office! As to the merits of TT I think that anything that promotes the subject to a general audience is a good thing and students always ask questions about how 'real' it is. It gives us a chance to explain what the real world of archaeology is about in relation to the program.

I have to say that I enjoyed the TT special t`other night where the British Isles was placed in its longer-term geo-environmental context. Was actually good telly. If this is a new approach by TT then I like it. We`ve had years of `just-so` stories where archaeology is reduced to banal entertainment. Hands up, I have to concede that the Prog has raised the profile of the industry in the eyes of an interested public but not always in a way that is positive. I would like to see a TT special where the team visit professional excavations across the UK. A kind of a fly on the wall thingy. The decades of TT have opened the eyes and maybe the hearts of the viewing public but there needs (perhaps now more than ever) to be a point to it all. They have (intentionally or not) created an environment where public awareness of archaeology is arguably at its highest levels ever and just such an environment would be the ideal springboard from which to launch a new approach. TT in its condensed and linear format has shown what can be achieved (albeit in an archaeology re-enactment society way) by a small band of people working within time constraints. Tony Robinson is said to be something of a political being so the next logical step would be for him to stand up, draw back the theatrical curtain and introduce the viewing public to the real world of the British industry.
And why not? The thousands of young people inspired by TT who promptly ran off to university in search of the dream probably by now have a few things to say......... Come on Tony-give us a TT special and make a difference.:face-approve:

Most definitley the best thing about being on TT is the catering wagon!
And so ok, it may be horrifically staged, but lets be honest, if it wasn't no one would watch it! Who would sit and watch a programme filmed on a genuine site? Its quite often very dull being there, nevermind watching it!
