Help Penn Museum identify this pot.

This pot is from either Roman Britain or the archaeological site of Ur in modern Iraq, or it is not part of either collection (It's a long story), if anyone can help us identify that would be brilliant 
It is currently approx. 40 cm high (without the neck/rim) and has a circumfrence of 1.10 m at the widest part of the shoulder.

Holey pot? Did someobody call?? Ooo. Nice. :face-approve:
I've no idea of course. As far as the holes go, it was clearly made with the holes in it (as opposed to them having been drilled after it was fired) so whatever it is, the holes are part of the original design and the initially intended function.
Perils of being interested in where the pottery *isn't*... I shall be awaiting further info with interest.

I have a very poor recolection of seeing something like this as a bird cage.....
I can't remember the exact details unfortunately -perhaps it was for a song bird? Ur then perhaps?

Could it be a Roman edible dormouse jar? The photo rings a bell from somewhere way back in my degree along with etruscan cheese graters. I remember that Roman soldiers used to carry them around with live dormice in them as supplies. (My parents live in south Bucks and there are still edible dormice about there).
