BAJR Wrote:hhhmmmm My 'big lie' is that archaeology is fun and educational, a better class than any other out there. Where else can almost all aspects of science meet all aspects of humanties in such a interesting and challenging way. It is basically CSI on steroids. Which brings me to my vision. 1. there will always be commercial mitigation, museums/curators/regulators, and academics. 2. there will be a forth pillar of archaeology and hopefully bigger then all the others, public archaeology. A nice day out on a public dig with some mates is probably the most enjoyable of any archaeology. Sell the public on how interesting and fun archaeology can be and you can make public archaeology the forth pillar. With lots of nice jobs not that you asked for my 2 pence but there you go

You seem to be assuming that the current 'fad' for any/everything 'heritage' will last (just look at this week's TV listings - overload!)...and how do you know that there will always be 'commercial mitigation' which is, in the scheme of things, rather a new development which has rather conspicuously not got past its 'bedding in' phase and could disappear again just as quickly as perceptions and fashions change (or the development sector band together to say NO! to government...) - enjoy it while you can :face-kiss:

Doug Wrote:Yes, but history also teaches us that things can last a really long time}. Depends on the relative position of the observer/ thing. Existence is fleeting, nature abhors a vacuum, everything is destined to end up as dust. It wouldn't take much to render history/archaeology irrelevant in the eyes of the powers that be. Whether its a big war, nuclear terrorism, environmental disaster, or the great asteroid Apohosis. Its just few of us have experienced anything that big in our lifetimes and hence can't image that level of change to our comfortable lives. But that doesn't mean things will remain so. Just out of prophetical interest, things to look out for, coming soon...... Israel/US war with Iran threatens to drag the planet into another world war Rapid climatic change events threaten food supplies and wreak havoc with the economies of many countries Viral outbreak spirals out of control as governments ignore advice from WHO claiming they are scaremongering Asteroid strike around 2030 The first 'collapse' of a western country - who will it be? Place your bets....

Commercial archaeology took decades to make and will at least take years to destroyxx(, assuming we let it happen. Though if we are placing bets on a gigantic event that will be world changing to make us irrelevant.... Zombie bunnies with fangs like those on mighty python. Especially in the UK, with the tight gun laws, it will be pretty much game over. The western US should do pretty fine with its ridiculously high gun to people ratio and large amounts of government land requiring archaeological survey. As the saying goes, I'll just head west. |
