IfA/AAIS merger

With all the people whose work is connected to archaeology and heritage it would be interesting to know what percentage are actually members of IFA/AAIs, similarly how many companies are registered, or not.

You and quite a few folks-so, either they need to replace their PR rep' or we need thinking other than 'their way or our way'-something that involves everyone?

Exactly why is the current IfA not the organization to take the profession (if profession it be) down the chartered route, I wonder? Does this mean that the IfA needs some kind of reform, or is a completely new body proposed? I'm not totally clear what the point of that would be.

as do i. if people think another organisation could do better i am willing to bet it would still be run by the same individuals on the same agenda because they are the only ones who get off their arses to do anything.

All the IfA needs to do to suit the role is to change their constitution and vote on issues rather than vote to elect an elite who decide what your money is used for.

For a variety of reasons the IFA have got the backs up of many field archaeologists and as of yet I do not see them addressing this. To reiterate someoneelse's question how many " archaeologists" belong to the IFA and of those who do, is it because they feel they have to belong to get on professionally or do they truly believe in it's current structure and objectives?

there may well be some getting off their arses but they have yet to form an organisation with mass support that will improve the way archaeology is pracised or the pay professionals think they deserve. the ifa may well be flawed but it wont get fixed until enough join it to change it for the better - and there is nothing else

But how to persuade the uncommitted to join? Just look at this forum as an example: how many people are members, and how many are ACTIVE members? there's a big discrepancy in the numbers!

Joining the IfA won't enable you (or anyone) to change it. Look at their constitution.

IfA members can change the organisation by: electing Council members who determine strategy and policy; voting on proposed amendments to corporate documents at AGMs, participitaing in Special Interest Group activities and committees; standing as Council and committee members, and by proposing amendments to the constitution.
