As far as I am aware, if you want to carry out any intrusive operation on a SAM, then you need to apply for Scheduled Monument Consent - forms used to be available on the DCMS website I believe.

It is a legal requirement for any archaeologist working on a SAM to comply with the conditions on their SMC. Normally these include a requirement to publish.

but the with apparent COSMIC loophole that if it is a government secret, particularly one that might supply information that could be used in criminal proceedings, then they are entitled to shove it where no one can see it.

not much anywhere in the act about publishing. The only glimmer that I can see is in the use of the phrase CLASS 7 WORKS OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL EVALUATION in the instrument which I think (its a secret) might have been the form of consent used for cosmic (if any-whats the chances that they did not even fill in a consent application let alone approve it-its a secret) where we would have to expect the meaning of archaeological evaluation (we could start the trench thing again but lets save that for best) to require publication and that only very slimly based on ifa standards...not really anything that EH would worry about is it (mostly ex OA as well)...

Only just read this.
Be proud of yourself Baj, you stand head and shoulders above your stoners. We all know talk is cheap and there are alot of talkers- a good many motivated by everything else but what they should be motivated by. Difference is you soley have the good of archaeology at heart....and are prepared to actually do something about it, rather than the..STOP and lock them out..self promoting/preserving members.

Mistakes will be made. I take my hat off to you that you are prepared to put your arse on the line and risk making them. Only then can we all learn and move forward. All I've personally ever expected is a fair an even balance. I admire you having the balls to step forward and put all effort and expense into doing something that you personally have nothing to gain by but everything to lose....and all for the benefit of everyone else. I have a feeling you'll eventually end up like me though (very sore nadjers).

You ain't wrong about the purple swollen nadgers.. but hey... we is man enough to take it.. and I do feel thats where we are both the same... and we are growing in numbers.. with the more.. <cough> extreme members (and I use that word carefully ) looking just that...> "extreme members" there are hundreds of detectorists if not thousands, that just want a fair treatment... not looked down on and lectured to.. and there are lots of archaeologists who just quietly get on.. but are actually worried about what the peers have to say... " Tut Tut... you can't be talking to those grubby oiks .."

Well... long live a bit of openess.. and you are right.. I have nothing to gain... which kind of makes it look suspicious to some.. or perhaps you got it in one... I only ever have the archaeology at heart like yourself.

the answer was yes... I was found guilty.. though nobody was quite sure what of.. :face-huh: and I still think I am capable of holding a p#ssup in a brewery ... where others might not. Call me stupid, but it took me ages to realise that there was supposed to be a problem between metal detectorists and archaeologists and I still can't for the life of me figure out why. I think Hosty's right, the many archaeologists who quietly take an interest ought to be more open about it and then maybe it won't seem so strange and maybe we'll realise that this divide is artificial. You've certainly got me thinking.

Do North Americans have the same divide? I'm curious because they rely more on spatial distribution than we do. Detectorists I've met are genuinely keen for their treasure to fit into the big picture, so it seems to be as much our fault for overfixating on verticle strat. We certainly don't have the monopoly of the big picture.

Hosty, you deserve a three cheers for making a space where detectorists feel welcome!

cheers trowel... and its people like you and me and a lot of others that should stand up and be counted.. and you are one of the reasons why this is a place where everyone is welcome (well nearly) to talk without the fear of harsh words or judgemental tar brushing. And yes the same discussions are happening in the US.. right now..

Trowelmonkey,you've hit the nail on the head when you say about artificial divides-the fences between archaeologists amd MDers are superficial and should not exist,and all it achieves is to stop both sides talking and working together.I would not be surprised if the majority of the problems were wholly down to archaeologists with a holier than thou attitude towards MDers.
I don't think i've told this particular story before but here goes (with compliance of the AUP)..during the machine watching of an excavation a local MD chap phoned the office of the company doing the job and offered his services to go over the spoil heap prior to excavation and work along side the Sup watching the machine.The boss said yes,turn up on site and speak to the chap there.This he did and was told that he should have asked his (the Sup) permission to do the scanning as he was the one out in the field and it was his project.So a second permission was asked for and the Sup said no-get off my site I cant stand MDers.When the gent came back and worked as a volunteer digger on the excav he told me what had happened and he was to say the least about the arrogant way he had been treated by an archaeologist.
As for talking to MDers being frowned upon,that comes under freedom of speech and i'll be damned first before I take notice of anyone who tries to tell me who I can speak to and about what.:face-confused:

Very well put... I think we (archaeologists) have to admit our faults, (usually individuals, who can sour it all) and detectorists can do (are doing the same) with their own grumpy 'I am bot talking to archies' detectrosits.. and then we.. as a whole can get on. I find it heartening that the guy came back... proving his real interest in the same theing we are... and your welcome would be a good start too! Thanks for sharing that Dave... let the majority get on with getting on say I.
