Is it just me, or does the author not understand the difference between dendro and c14 dating? If he can't get even that straight, he hasn't done the reading he needs to do.

I suspect that he also does not understand two of the basic concepts of archaeological stratigraphy - assessing the degree of intrusiveness or residuality in any given context....the paragraphs suggesting that the best archaeology is that where finds and texts coincide is a little like saying 'It's always easier to date the finds when they come with a label detailing the best-before date' !!

Don't knock it, I've had occasion to distinguish two intercutting previous trial trenches in Durham by checking the sell-by dates on Mars bar wrappers and coke cans (considered a healthy digger-diet in the early 80s) - considering they were dug in 1983 and 1984, and hence in some cases I was running from batch-numbers, I think that's about as precision-dating as it gets :face-approve:
