I was detailing what Thatcherite policies have destroyed needlessly. Things always change. Such is life. But what Thatcherite economics has done, and is doing, is changing our society for the worse. Since the implementation of Thatcherite economics social and financial inequality has grown globally. This current recession has seen a mass movement of wealth from the poor and from the public purse to the super-rich. This has been facilitated by Thatcherite polices. There is an abundance of literature detailing this. Stats the works.

So Dino, unless you are a millionaire, I'd advise you to side with those who share you're interests. Margaret Thatchers reign has sowed bitter fruit that we are still harvesting.

at first i thought it churlish to celebrate a death but after seeing the whitewashing and beatifying i am glad that a counter view is making the news. but evil, really? and why is her sex relevant? why give grist to cameron's moral mill? he wont have to look far for his own scargill at this rate - but at least he wont need a foreign war

Her economic policies sowed the seeds of our current crisis. As for pay and conditions, Thatcher supported the deregulation of labour. The current crisis within archaeology, the race to the bottom in regards to wages, that would suit her just fine.

Don't confuse the scraps from the table for anything other then that.

Sorry, I read that as a wish to return to pre-Thatcherite days in archaeology - while she was in power things continuously got better for diggers, and continued to do so for a long time after - strangely the economy etc also seemed to go out of control after she was out of office - Thatcherism worked fine under Thatcher, if it's gone t**s since that can hardly be laid at her door, more her successors.

And I reiterate that diggers are still far better off than they were pre-Maggie

Wasn't actually inconvenienced by any of those, and never saw the objection to the community charge, why should you pay more to have your bin emptied just because you earn more? people moan about taxes being unfair, that was one of the fairest taxes ever suggested, everyone pays the same for the same services? Council tax is grossly unfair, why should you pay more just because of your postcode?

Apart from the Miners strike...and the steelworkers strike.....and the Poll Tax strike..and the Greenham protests. Mark Steel ha a piece in the Independent about Corby - a whole town killed by Thatcherite policy..not a million miles away from one of the largest archaeological excavations carried out in the 1980s. I guess a lot of archaeologists didn't realise what was happening on their doorstep....

Not sure which site you are referring to, but I spent most of '83 working on a big Roman town site (Ashton) near Corby. We had quite a few Manpower Services blokes on site who were Corby ex-steelworkers. Hard as nails, but top blokes and bloody hard workers. They took some of us out drinking in Corby one night. One of the pubs had fresh gashes in the top of the bar as the night before someone had been thrown out, and had come back with an axe. Town was full of junkies as well. A once-proud town turned into a horrible, horrible wasteland. Still find it amusing that they're now trying to sell the place as a London commuter dormitory town. They'd get eaten.
