Just looked at the utub hits for the first video on this thread The Hills are Alive ..East lomond 78 views(25/11/2014) Published on 19 Nov 2014. Its been up a few days(six). I don't imagine that all those views watched it through all the way or that all the audience at that lecture got everything out of it. but At some point the utub views of the lecture can only become more important than the number of people that were at the lecture (I imagine several thousand) but then possibly the utub audience take precedence and it could be argued that the lecturer should have been concentrating on "this audience rather that those that were in front of them at the time (a picture of the audience which might enable face recognition might be interesting). Thing is how do you find this lecture in utub world (via google). Picture / video recognition is pretty basic where as a text recognition is the meat and bones of googlites so called algorithms.

Looked at the metadata for the video and get <meta name="keywords" content="archaeology, Fife (Scottish Council Area), Lomond Hills (Mountain Range), Scotland, History">

I don't think that you are going to find the long tail that is archaeology that way. Have you thought about getting the lecture as full a transcript of their mumblings as possible and dumping it in the metaheader? just think that you will find a (paying) audience so much faster(consider foreign translations as well)

my thoughts on the lecture concentrating on the utub audience is that they probably should deliver the lecture from behind the audience (or facing the screen) so that they appreciate what the audience is looking at and that corresponds with the internet audience. makes things a bit more gender, disability, racist and age neutral as well.

It does not show up on the video but on YouTube I have the number of minutes people watch. Yes, some people leave after a few minutes, usually seconds, but quite a few watch it all the way through. All very interesting.

I do get a bit go long tail because google does recommendations based on what other people watch. For that algorithm they do not actually need to have too much text. The key word archaeology is enough to associate it with other archaeology videos. After that an algorithm kicks in and sees if people are interested enough from the recommendation to view it, how long they view it, etc. etc. I am sure it is all very complicated but it means people still come to the video months later.

Actually, putting together a bid now to try and set up a way to transcribe videos or crowd souce transcriptions. I do think that would help with search a bit, also accessibility- for those with hearing issues or can't understand accents or when the sound is particularly bad. Hopefully, in the next couple of months that will be set up... hopefully. But, you know how projects are... lots of hope and a few succeed.

PS '(paying) audience- I don't have one. I took advertisements off my YouTube channel so I make no money from people watching the videos. I do most of this work for free.

pps- views are higher on the videos, there is a few day delay between what happens and what is presented next to the video. It is around 100 views and there were about 160 people at the conference.

Another conference to watch over the winter holidays- Royal Scone. Part of the conference was about Scone Palace in Scotland but also about seats of royal power or local power around Europe. Mix of archaeologists, historians and architects (interesting to see the different styles of presenting).
