Are standards slipping. it is more about standards enforced and measurable standards created to match a large number of possibilities.
So cleaning a base may be useful sometimes, and not others. Cleaning the sides or a side as well may be useful... so to create a proscriptive standard is going to be difficult, because of the "ah but we will do it this way and save the client time and money" argument and so therefore with 4 ways to skin the same cat and get the same pelt...

Sorry I am a bit sensitive to facebookisums and I am up to my eyeballs in NPPF at the moment. Bloody nationalism. Problem with the NPPF is that it has no standards. Almost all of the heritage clauses are about the authorising authority and nothing about the structure of fieldwork.

So the answer is probably, but first you need to know what the "standards" are and have the experience to know when and how to apply them whilst doing what the boss tells you. With the knowledge that the only one it matters to is you as a "professional" and in the long run with no one checking (lack of county mounties) its all pretty pointless anyway. Get back to the good old days of machining everything out without an archaeologist within a hundred miles. lack of standards = HERITAGE CRIME :face-crying:

The lack of a control/review of one's work (with the lack of county mounties) can only lead to a fall in standards, though there has always been a 'whack it out no-one will ever know' nature to some archaeological practice.
It's the lack of this control/review together with the growth in viewing archaeology as 'site contamination' which is the killer though.
Will the system of curatorial control ever come back?

A strong and consistent national level of standards that are both prescriptive and enforced with discretion (hopefully not an oxymoron) Application of these standards and a system of curatorial control is what is required

And er... As many people know. back in 2008 I resigned from the IfA - however I rejoined (part by accident) and have a very good working relationship. The job site jibe is cool as well. but sits badly with the strap line "more than just a job site"

Very. Off topic. And there was no illegal detecting rally on a Sam. There was a legal rally near a Sam with involvement from council and pas. As to being just a jobsite.. lol... Even this forum is proof it is more than that. Try to stay on topic
