The sooner that archaeology moves away from the idea that the results must be formally published in monographs, local or regional journals, period journals etc the better. I suspect that publication is a financial burden to most smaller companies and is a subsidised stick for the big companies which they can use to beat down upon their smaller local rivals. I think online dissemination of the raw data and accompanying articles is the way to go.

Companies need to remember that preservation by record means that the report needs to be published and available in the public forum; this needs to be included in the costs. I agree that the format is irrelevant and more use should be made of digital publishing, but am aware that some group is going to be responsible for the cost of hosting the data. But following posts above you should not be expected to work in your own time/for free (unless you want to) just because people cannot manage budget.

I notice your use of the word companies Duntrowlin which you can take to indicated working on salary but which I take to mean that you sign your copyright to the company and that the company exists to disseminate that copyright in what ever "publication" format which appears to satisfy the contract that was contrived to satisfy a wsi which was contrived to satisfy a brief that was written for an imaginary tender system that has been imagined by a condition attached to a planning Decision or variations there of . And the finds and samples have a life of their own in this system which in not how it is done in Scotland.
When the process is taken through by an individual archaeologist the first thing to note is that everything other than the primary archive is bunkum. This primary archive comprises of ownership and copyright. I cant say I know what problem that prentise is suggesting about the hours bit but I can be quite specific about the field work, finds processing and report writing hours that I charge the client for. That people calling themselves archaeologists working in Companies do extra unpaid hours presumably is a method of undercutting my price. Good Luck to them.
Hello Sikelgaita, I think that NPPF para 141 is the way to go with an injection of 129 which is the only way to understand
Quote:Local planning authorities should make information about the significance of the historic environment gathered as part of plan-making or development management publicly accessible
. If there is any paperwork it should be in the form of a bound copy which I take as good enough to discharge the condition. Obviously I suggest single because I don't take it as my problem. I don't take it as my problem because round my way they have taken to charging the discharge fee before they will even look at agreeing the wsi. Happy days

Internet publishing's no use for filling the shelves of my study/library - when I can afford one...need to get a lottery ticket, premium bonds haven't lived up to expectation so far...

If a Company ever undercuts your prices I would guess the majority of the time someone pricing the job messed up...it is much easier for them to attack your standards.

However easy, and by that how effectual is easy ever been as I still stand. May they spend many hours of not being paid, attacking my standard, which, by the way, is a straw horse.
If only we got the opportunity to attack each other. I am quite physical being field orientated and have a pointy trowel.
In my experience its just me, phone rings and the client convinces me that its love, we talk about wsi and I say that's no relevant as its something to do with tenders. I accept only on the agreement that the whole of the public service are leaches and that we do everything to show them up (but I use more colourful expletives in stead of show them up). Occasionally I get a client who turns out to be a Christen and they go and spend a fortune with some charity full of nerds.
Attack, I offer my rear.

We looked at it, but it doesn't seem to have happened, not sure why. Think we'd even found a local printer prepared to knock them out for us.

Perhaps there's not enough demand? I foresee that on-line publication of one kind or another may be the future.
