thats pretty much how I was planning on doing it, which is a relief.
Good suggestion re pre-fixing the files so you block calibrate, although that way you have to go back and rename the polygons manually. Can you use a / in filenames in arcView, I was always under the impression you couldn't as it indicates a new folder level? Get around that by separate folders for each 5m square? then 'join' the segments of multi-square plans later? faff either way I suppose.
It is indeed the distortion from the scanner which I've had trouble with in the past. It was quite bad in times, too bad in fact.
