It's a matter for the individual university and their human resource department - to your one case there are the severl mentiond by David on the 'pay analysis' thread. Different organisations will be able to pay differently because of: benefits package; geographical location; local regulatory framework; structure and detail of job descriptions; nature of client base; services offered; nature of local and national competition; expereince and efficiency of workforce; experience and efficiency of mangement; negotiation framework in the organisation; union recognition in the workforce; commitment of organisation to other costs; training oppertunities; bonus schemes in operation - etc etc the use of anecdotal or one off examples does not really make the case for an overnight payrise over 6 times greater than that of inflation
