The problem, if problem it be, is partly down to the varying size of employers (staff numbers, not nano-employers!). A small outfit is unlikely to care much what they call you and you are likely to be called upon to carry out a variety of tasks - often at varying "levels". Personally I like that, I've never been keen on earning stripes and badges! Also your title tends to vary in proportion to the economic climate - too much work and not enough staff means a gradiose title, then a year or two later and the position is reversed, you're down from Emperor of the Universe to Assistant Stapler Reloader. In fact you're doing exactly the same thing.
Larger firms understandably feel the need to introduce human stratigraphy to try to cope with pay levels and so on. This tends to lead to all sorts of pettiness and point scoring. I've known someone demand to be paid more than me because he was older than me. There is little chance of things ever being uniform across different employers or types of employers.
Personally I don't care what they call me as long as they press the necessary into my grubby little mitts every month.
We owe the dead nothing but the truth.
