I think we have to look at what is a logical planning unit. The Tories cannot be blamed for the current mess. This constituted a large block on my TCP course.
In Scotland there is a logical system with an authourity being a city and a hinterland to an extent.
In England there are a variety of authouroties. The bottom line is that the archaeologists need to be in there with the decision makers in any event.
I say we need two levels of advice -
local in the LPA - why is below ground archaeology different to buildings
regional - to give strategic advice on archaeological matters.
In my view County Authourities should be abolished (sorry chaps nothing against archaeologists").
On my calculation there is a net increase in the number of curators which is surely a good thing.
