Right click on the main 'desktop'
this will bring up a box, the bottom one saying properties
click that and you can enter the wonderful world of you preferences. I would choose SETTINGS >> ADVANCED button.
If you have a laptop then you often have a button that lets you access the 'video card' or screen preferences.
One useful thing to do to calibrate a screen.... this is very useful if you take photos... as often the screen image bears no relation to the final print!.... Take a photo of your hand... store it on your computer and then bring up the image on the screen... then holding your own hand up against the screen use the brightness and contrast to get a perfect match.
I do understand where people are coming from, the reason behind the 'softening' was to a) keep up with the latest trends and b) make it easier on the eyes. I have upped the greyscale of the text to 80% from 60%...
I could of course have a dual stylesheet so that you choose which version to read.... (oh oh... I am starting to speak in techno babble)
