Best unpredicted H&S disaster:
I heard a story - don't know if it was true - about a dig in central Cyprus at the time of the Turkish invasion (1974?).
According to the story, the diggers were way out in the countryside and a bit cut-off from current events. One day they were surprised to see a lot of Greet Cypriot troops going south in a hurry - closely followed by some Turkish ones, who saw a lot of trenches in the distance and started shelling.
They surrendered very quickly.
