May or may not be applicable, but Tilley wrote 'A Phenomenology of Landscape' which covers this kind of ground. A very accessible book as I remember (a cover to cover read no less).
Alternatively, in Troll's absense, I'll plug his undergrad thesis which looked at similar relationships (rivers to monuments) in Dorset. He was published in the Dorset Natural History and Archaeological Society journal (Vol 121, 1999) on the same subject.
