The question does need to be asked, if people expect universities to churn out field staff, what proportion of archaeology graduates actually go on and work in the field after completing a degree? Out of my year at university it was 1/9 as a proportion. Most of us who stayed in archaeology for any length of time went onto do various postgrad degrees first.
