How they do will have more to do with the framework in which the private companies operate, rather than whether the individuals within a company are 'up to it'.

I am yet to meet a commercial archaeologist who wouldn't jump at the chance at doing more on many sites but who are held back by a system which lacks the enforcement powers necessary to make a higher level of examination economically feasible.

Also, I would point out that there are countless post excavation departments out there doing some very impressive research within the current system, and we shouldn't belittle their efforts.
