Aching Knees may be interested to note that metal detectors are sometimes used on pipelines. On one occassion a transect survey was carried out along the whole route (approx 60km if my memory is correct) - similar in sample area to fieldwalking. The results were surprisingly dissapointing though and I am keener on the more intensive pre-stripping/post-stripping and spoil heap scan of areas of known or significantly raised potential. On sites where I am involved we try and use detectorists recommended by the curators/PAS as units seldom have in-house capability - a shame I think.
I personally don't have any issues with rallies so long as they are conducted in a responsible manner and all results are fed back to the PAS/HER. Will the eventual programme be sufficiently 'educational' or will the media be more interested in the booty?
