Good lord, sorry to hear that about your friend. I've had a few nasty times when out riding, but nothing more serious than a broken tooth and losing a chunk of hair when tangled in a branch at a canter when the horse decided to take an 'alternate' route. Induced comas are sometimes a good thing, giving the body a chance to recuperate without being distracted by everything around them.
