surely this was always so and indeed is true of they way we see the present world but to dismiss theory as 'an intellectual exercise that may have very little relation ... blah blah' would seem to be suggesting that archaeology is pointless!!!!
Theory underpins everything we think whether you like it not
If they can get you asking the wrong questions, they don't have to worry about answers
