Depends on the relative position of the observer/ thing. Existence is fleeting, nature abhors a vacuum, everything is destined to end up as dust.
It wouldn't take much to render history/archaeology irrelevant in the eyes of the powers that be. Whether its a big war, nuclear terrorism, environmental disaster, or the great asteroid Apohosis.
Its just few of us have experienced anything that big in our lifetimes and hence can't image that level of change to our comfortable lives.
But that doesn't mean things will remain so.
