I once did some work for a certain City Council unit in the early 90s. The pay was monthly, and on receiving my first payslip I noticed something was funny - no deductions!
So I rang the wages department and asked why no deductions? They replied because I was taken on like a self-employed window cleaner etc. I explained it was a job with regular hours etc, but to no avail.
So then I rang my tax office, explained I had a funny payslip, they asked a few details about my job, then said, no, you should be having PAYE deductions.
So I rang wages back and told them what tax office had said. Oh, very sorry, we'll sort it out immediately. New payslip arrives within a few days - take home same, but funnily enough initial wages were higher to allow for the tax and NI they now had to deduct - Oh the beauty of being naive!
