The article I linked discusses some of the issues with crowdfunding game projects, and I felt that some of the points fit the case of DigVentures equally well -- namely, the points it makes about 1) the target budget 2) what backers are getting for their money 3) prior experience of the project creators (which I'm not questioning, but others did in the earlier thread) and most importantly 4) "the pitch", for which I'll just quote the article and replace "developers" with "archaeologists":
