Interesting point Unitof1 - I didn't think when I starting working for IfA it meant I lost my ability to have an opinion as a member. My post above is a personal view, and I am pretty certain it would be the same if I worked for IfA or not. Is my view as a member, or my experience prior to joining IfA, no longer valid? I didn't think it was appropriate to not be open about who I work for.
In terms of staff wages, the core staff of the institute are paid for by member and RO subs. Additional project funds or support can come from a number of sources, such as HLF, Historic Scotland and, yes, English Heritage - depends on the project and is usually pretty flagged up on the website, or any documents coming out of projects.
