This is the case where I work, and we have opted - to keep this person - for a specific work VISA via the company (as any company in the UK of any profession would who wanted to employ a non-EU member).
However, for this you of course have to be attached to a specific employer, so they would have to be happy to help you apply for this. I wish you luck and hope you manage to stay here and get the right VISA. Needless to say, in the case of archaeology, it helps enormousdly if you have chosen to study here and have been working on an graduate Visa over here already.
