Interesting info, read "The Rats in the walls" when I was about thirteen not a good idea. Often wondered who wrote it. gave me nightmares for many years after.
Dino is right Lovecraft is dealing with the Occult . life on Mars. Pincher Martin and possibly Donnie Darko are dealing with alternate realities created by people who are dying (not dead but in that limbo just before passing). Now maybe there is a relationship to archaeology as the rituals people practiced when dealing with death are often to aid that transition. When you look at what literature has done with this subject it is very probable there were complex believe systems and rituals to deal with the transition.
