Hmmm...
1) Should we define "research" as work undertaken to answer a specific question(s), culminating in publication? Be that peer-reviewed journals, edited monographs (often with a reliance on the grey literature) etc.
2) The contextual research necessary for site reports/assessments etc is different...it's still research but I can't just now think, of a suitable term that does the amount of effort justice. Is this kind of work generally destined for the grey literature with a similar aim for every site, focussed upon site context. I'm not particularly familiar with 2), so please rip this to pieces
