Every digger may have a phone with more computing power than NASA when they put a man on the moon, but nobody else can access it (even them if they lose/squash it). The whole point of archiving is to allow somebody down the line to get the data out and look at it afresh.
Equally if the digger gets squashed there are problems getting access to the data of a deceased individual.
