This deppression has hit a lot of units (some harder than others), but I still think that as a profession we should resist giving into despair and try to come out of it stronger-as Granny Weatherwax would say "I aintent dead yet". Though in what shape archaeology will be in once things turn around is anybodies guess.
I like to think that the last part of Tennyson's 'Ulysses' sums it up:
"and though we are not now that strength
which in old days Moved earth and heaven;
that which we are, we are; One equal temper
of heroic hearts, Made weak by time and fate,
but strong in will To strive, to seek, to
find, and not to yield."
