I particularly liked the bit when Councillor Melton talked about the abuse he'd received from archaeolgists. It all seemed pretty tame to me - he must have worked on some particularly refined building sites when he was a bricklayer if he reckons that's abuse! And while he said that he'd been accused of being in the pocket of developers, I noticed that he didn't actually deny it....

I thought Mike came across very well, and well done too to Eddie Mair on calling the Councillor on his ridiculous 'Long Live Eric Pickles!' response - it was worth highlighting mainly because it shows a level of arrogance and contempt for a member of the public who has contacted an elected representative to voice some well-founded concerns.

Although I am sure Cllr Melton will probably complain he didn't have a proportionate amount of time to speak, what he did say did not help his case at all and hats off to Mike Heyworth. Very professional.

Hmm, I suspect they will totally ignore the letter. If you're lucky there might be an ill-informed one-line response.

I kind of expect that from Melton, but the Conservatives on Fenland DC are a large group, and I'd imagine not all agree....especially as in some areas councillors have positively and wholeheartedly embraced heritage (such as in Chatteris where they have run a community dig with Oxford East and host an annual Medieval Festival)
We ought to ensure all have an opportunity for dialogue, and that people don't feel pressed into a corner so that they have to defend Melton's comments.

Councillor Melton seems to have single handedly untied a nation of archaeologists against cuts. localism and ignorance and created a logo/image (the Hugged Bunny) with which we can associate with a sense of real pride. Now remind me again - whose side is he on?
