Could someone more learned in the ways of BAJR explain to me how this is acceptable discourse? I tried asking an admin but nobody replied. Is it some elaborate in-joke by one of the presenters' friends?

because this forum went to the dogs a long time ago, and the admin only ban people who make clearly libellous posts.

For the record I find this sort of nonsense from Unitof1 probably just as upsetting as you do. And I'm certain it puts off decent folk from partaking. But then you have to bear in mind that this is a sort of virtual care in the community for him.

This thread has turned into a Unit of 1 discussion. The Pub Dig show was ok. In that the archaeology was interesting for such a small 'micro' dig. It showed that it is not just the large 'sexy' digs that are worth reporting (as in most media). Small scale digs can tell a story. Not so happy about the comments - "handling large jugs" and getting the 'horn' followed by Sid James laughter. But this is Channel 5. Also there were so many beer bellies I thought it was a show about neo-natal classes! McGrath just did his 'Idiot Bloke' act and Blinkers came across as engaging and knowing what he was talking about.

Unit is Unit, sorta like Marmite. On another note, I quite enjoyed watching the Pub Dig with my non archaeology partner. She had some good questions regarding PB's relative dating methods for some of the features. It was actually quite enjoyable to explain to her what she was seeing! Nothing wrong with a light hearted approach to digging. :face-approve:

Can anyone confirm whether or not Rory McGrath started out as a musician or not. I am certain I saw him performing once in a band called The Fabulous Poodles (c1977), but there is nothing on Wikipedia to confirm this.....I remember him telling a joke between numbers about bits of ones anatomy that might hang out of your pyjamas...maybe it was just a one-off gig!

I don't think he ever worked with them - but he has worked more recently with the violin player Bobby Valentino from the Fabulous Poodles in a comedy band. So there's some connection there. He's not exactly a virtuoso guitarist so if he started out a musician it didn't last long.

On topic, I thought Pub Dig was quite good; not so breathless as Time Team, which is great as that looked pretty fake even to non-archaeologists.
Also, Paul Blinkhorn did indeed work for Oxford for a bit, in the nineties before going freelance. I hadn't ventued my opinion on Pub Dig thus far because he's an old mate, so I'm biased.

Why would someone be banned for expressing an opinion, harsh as it was? Are we subject to the thought police.

Unit may be annoying, and I admit I rarely read all the way through his (?) posts, but he occasionally drops a diamond into a sea of mud.

Without a diversity of voices a forum like this would stagnate into nothing but a verbal masturbation of agreement and self-righteous back patting.
